まずは朗報、マカイビーディーヴァが今年の豪州年度代表馬に選出されたニュースから。
Makybe Diva Crowned Australian Horse of the Year
Dual Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) winner Makybe Diva capped off a memorable season when she was crowned 2005 Australian Horse of the Year Wednesday night.
In a comprehensive victory in the voting sponsored by TVN, Makybe Diva polled 114 votes out of possible 145 to receive the award in front of a capacity crowd inside Crown's Palladium.
天皇賞（春）のときは、馬場の問題か、牡馬と牝馬の実力差か、とにかく精彩を欠きましたが、当然の受賞でしょう。圧倒的な得票率も納得。
ドバイデューティーフリーを勝っている、得票数二位（１８票）の Elvstroem 号（父デインヒル、母 Circles of Gold）は、残念ながら先月引退をしてしまいましたね。
なお、四月の中山グランドジャンプを制したことが評価されて、Karasi が今年度の年度代表障害馬に選ばれたことも特筆しておきたい。
それにしても、昨今の豪州は上の三頭といい、Grand Armee （父 Hennessy）といい、良い馬を輩出しますね。そういえば、今は南半球は種付けシーズンの真っ最中です。
First Shuttle Sires Arrive in Australia
When the plane touched down in Sydney July 24 in the dark, barely anyone awake at the time realized that on board was a cargo worth around $225 million (Australian funds). As the winter's morn rolled away, the door to the plane was rolled back too and on board were the American shuttlers who will serve hundreds and hundreds of Aussie mares this season.
The Southern Hemisphere breeding season starts Sept. 1 and after spending two weeks in quarantine, these expensive North American-based blue bloods will be ready to do their thing. Belong To Me was among the number, as was Dubleo, the exciting newcomer to Vinery.
２億２５００万ドル相当ですか・・・！保険会社は胸をなでおろしたことでしょうｗ ちなみに、ここに挙げられている Belong To Me や Dubleo のほかにも、Fusaichi Pegasus、Johannesburg、King Cugat、Lion Heart、Monashee Mountain、Hold That Tiger、More Than Ready、Royal Academy、Tale of the Cat、E Dubai、Elusive Quality、Street Cry・・・オーストラリアで肌馬を所有している牧場主なら目移りしそうなリストです。すべて注目馬ですが、産駒がまだデビュー前の Lion Heart *1や、Street Cry *2 あたりが、どのような仔をもうけるのか興味深いところ。オーストラリアが血統レベル最上位国になる日はすぐそこです。
しかし、こうしたシャトル種牡馬がアメリカ経由だけで７１頭（今年度）も襲来するということは、逆に考えれば、もとより豪州で繁殖入りした牡馬たちの活躍の場を狭めることになるわけで、それが競走界・生産界にとって長期的に見てどうなのか（事情が似ている日本でも切実な問題だと思います）検討を要することは言うまでもありません。
Hall of Famer Day Retires; To Assist With Racetrack Chaplaincy Program
Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day, racing's all-time money leading rider, has retired from the saddle and will assume a role in ministering to youth groups and assisting the Race Track Chaplaincy of America program.
５１歳。もちろん、まだまだ現役続行も肉体的には可能だとは思いますが、８８０３勝を挙げた今、もはや「見るべき程の事は見つ」といった心境でしょう。
最後に。今回は海外ニュースばかりでしたね。
Streak Reaches Nine for Divine Proportions
The undefeated filly Divine Proportions ran her winning streak to nine Sunday with a comfortable two-length win in the Prix d'Astarte (Fr-I) on the one-mile straight at Deauville.
フランス１０００ギニーも、フランスオークスも圧勝した９連勝無敗馬 Divine Proportions の今後はというと、秋にブリーダーズカップ・マイルに挑戦するとか。それはそれで結構なのですが、今年から天皇賞（秋）を国際競走にした（エンペラーズカップ１００周年記念）わけですから、世界的な注目を浴びるためにも、こういうレベルの馬を必死になって誘致するくらいの気概がＪＲＡに求められます。
